More than 200 national and international civil society organizations issued a joint statement today demanding that the United States Congress immediately intervene to prevent the use of nuclear weapons against Iran. The unified declaration, which was initiated by Back from the Brink, IPPNW, and Physicians for Social Responsibility, follows repeated nuclear threats against the Islamic Republic and escalating rhetoric from President Trump regarding potential military action after the upcoming midterm elections.
The groups warn that the risk of a catastrophic conflict is rapidly intensifying, citing a volatile pattern of shifting administration policies and public statements. Activists stress that the unchecked authority of the executive branch to launch a nuclear strike poses an immediate and grave danger to countless innocent lives in Iran, the region, and the world.
“The use of even a single nuclear weapon in Iran would destroy a taboo that has held since Nagasaki, with unimaginable consequences for all humanity,” the organizations stated in their declaration. “The US president should not have the unchecked authority to launch nuclear war.”
The joint statement outlines a surge in aggressive rhetoric over the past year. In April, the President publicly declared that “a whole civilization will die tonight,” followed by a May social media post featuring an AI-generated image of himself at a nuclear control panel. Subsequent remarks to reporters and at the United Nations in September explicitly questioned if and when the U.S. would “blow the entire nation up” or “annihilate the Islamic Republic.”
While the administration claimed on October 15 that nuclear weapons would not be utilized, the signing organizations argue that sudden policy reversals have become a defining feature of the presidency, making it impossible to discount these statements as idle threats.
The coalition is calling on congressional leaders to immediately assert their constitutional authority as the only branch of government empowered to declare war – and to make clear that it does not authorize or condone the use of nuclear weapons in Iran.
