Who likes nuclear weapons?
From a humanistic perspective, it may seem strange that many ordinary citizens in countries like India, Pakistan, and North Korea apparently are in favor of the insane nuclear weapons programs of their governments. Maybe they have been brainwashed with terms like national strength, power, and security?
In other parts of the world, in particular in countries that are free of nuclear weapons, but also in states possessing such weapons, ordinary people seem to be less preoccupied with and less in favor of the nuclear weapons programs of the nuclear-weapons-armed states.
So why is it that a handful of governments still cling to nuclear weapons and use terms like national strength, power and security as reasons for still possessing these outdated and inhuman weapon systems? It seems that heads of states and the governments suffer from some delusional disorder where words and reason have lost their meaning. How is it possible to use positively charged words about technical devices that are able, in a very short time, to kill an endless number of human beings indiscriminately, and to destroy the environment in a way that would make our lovely planet nearly uninhabitable?
It is time that everybody starts to use a true and correct language when we talk about nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons are inhuman, useless, illegal, and tremendously expensive. Nobody should be misled to believe that these weapons are good for anything, and it cannot be regarded as anything but perverse to describe nuclear weapons as crucial for the security of anyone. The fact is that they are the most insecure and cruel weapons ever created.
Who likes nuclear weapons? The producers gain from their existence, perhaps, but they would also be much more secure and better off if they used their enormous technical skills and capacity to develop and produce something useful. So, if both ordinary people and politicians consider the question in a personal and humanitarian way, and we are honest with ourselves, no human being can like nuclear weapons. That is one of many reasons why they should be outlawed and abandoned—the sooner the better.

“India, Pakistan, and North Korea”
Ummm, hello Bjorn. Shouldn’t we be focusing on the big terror states, US, UK, France etc.?
As long as militarist aggressors with first strike doctrines are brandishing these weapons is it really any wonder that victim nations seek deterrent force?
Very true and well-said. Thank you so much for posting this.
